Atlantis Volume 22
Atlantis Volume 22
Since urbanism is a practical science and therefore draws from multiple disciplines, the challenge for the student urbanist is to construct a meaningful whole out of this versatile input. In order to accomplish this, perspectives from different communities have to be judged.
At the TU Delft department of Urbanism these different perspectives are made explicit in eleven chairs, each providing - apart from the research side of matters - input for the education of students. Because the chairs represent different world views, the challenge for the student is to deduct a narrative out of them. That means finding relations but also questioning certain ideas. This 'synthesizing' is, to our mind, the most important academic and professional quality one must have.
The purpose of Atlantis volume 22, published in 4 issues, is to contribute to this challenge by exposing different, sometimes even opposing perspectives on urbanism. It is organized along four issues: Urban Society; Urban Form; Urban Economy and Urban Landscape. Within each issue different ideas, methods and techniques will be shown. This is done by means of articles, essays, interviews, designs, photos and models obtained from students, academics and practitioners. These issues are combined in this special edition of Volume 22. Hopefully this combination will form a more coherent whole than a mere collection of isolated issues would have done.
You will find the journal Atlantis in the faculty library of Architecture.

Exhibition in the Architecture Library
Water is the theme of the 170th birthday of the TU Delft and this anniversary year. There will be many activities related to the theme. That is why the library of the faculty of Architecture made a small exhibition in the showcase. All the books exhibited have to do with living on or with water. Of course in relation to architecture and urbanism. The books are in the collection of the library.

Veranderingen Kaartenkamer

Exhibition in the Architecture Library
Some time ago a new book was purchased for our library. This book, De wetten van de bouwkunst, was written by Petra Brouwer. In the publication attention is paid to architecture books from the 19th century. According to Brouwer these handbooks were the motor of architectural renewal in that century. In De wetten van de bouwkunst (see the book in our collection) the reader will find an extensive bibliography. While preparing her book, Brouwer visited The Trésor in the Central Library several times.
The publication by Petra Brouwer is now the main subject of a new exhibition in the showcase in the faculty library of Architecture. Together with some of the books which are mentioned in De wetten van de bouwkunst. For the greater part these books belong to the collection of The Trésor. The Trésor is opened for the public on friday, but only by making an appointment.
